    • The World Coalition Against the Death Penalty, an alliance of more than 140 NGOs, bar associations, local authorities and unions, was created in Rome on 13 May 2002. The aim of the World Coalition is to strengthen the international dimension of the fight against the death penalty. Its ultimate objective is to obtain the universal abolition of the death penalty. The World Coalition gives a global dimension to the sometimes isolated action taken by its members on the ground. It complements their initiatives, while constantly respecting their independence.

      Main tasks:

The World Coalition is recruiting a writer/researcher to write a handbook on the abolition of the death penalty for parliamentarians. The consultant will be in charge of:

      ·         Examining the role of parliamentarians in abolishing the death penalty starting with interviews with parliamentarians from different regions around the world

      ·         Collaborating with the members of the World Coalition to identify successful stories of collaboration between parliamentarians and civil society in the abolition of the death penalty

      ·         Researching the international law aspects of the abolition of the death penalty

      ·         Conducting a study on the different procedures to ratify international treaties

      ·         Compiling all the collected data in a handbook for parliamentarians on the abolition of the death penalty

      ·         Submitting a first draft of the handbook by the end of 2013 for comments

      ·         Submitting the final draft of the handbook by mid February 2013.

      Qualifications:

      ·         Proven record of writing and editing reports

      ·         Good organizational and writing skills

      ·         Perfect knowledge of either English or French, spoken and written, and working knowledge of the other (the report will be written in one of the two languages but interaction with both Francophone and Anglophone parliamentarians and civil society members will be necessary for the research)

      ·         Willingness to work in a multicultural environment

      ·         Familiarity with topics related to human rights, parliamentary work and the death penalty is an asset.

      We offer:

      ·         An editing contract covering the period mid September 2013 – mid February 2014

      ·         Compensation based on experience to be discussed at the moment of recruitment.
