Iran: double pendaison à Kish  from Death Penalty News
Pakistan: death penalty for "cyber terrorists"  from Death Penalty News
November 6, 2008: Causing death through "cyber terrorism" will be punishable by death in Pakistan, according to a decree issued by President Asif Ali Zardari. The Prevention of Electronic Crimes law will be applicable to anyone who commits a crime detrimental to national security through the use of a computer or any other electronic device, the government said in the ordinance. "Whoever commits the offence of cyber terrorism and causes death of any person shall be punishable with death or imprisonment for life," according to a copy of the ordinance, published by the state-run APP news agency. The law will apply to Pakistanis and foreigners whether living in Pakistan or abroad. The ordinance described cyber terrorism as accessing of a computer network or electronic system by someone who then "knowingly engages in or attempts to engage in a terroristic act". The ordinance listed several definitions of a "terroristic act" including stealing or copying, or attempting to steal or co ...
Silence opens us to charges of hypocrisy  from Death Penalty News
LAWYERS for the three of the Australian Bali nine (pictured) convicted heroin smugglers on death row in Indonesia are concerned about the fate of their clients following the Australian Government's failure to speak out against the execution of the Bali bombers. A lawyer for some of the men, Julian McMahon, warned that the Federal Government's unwillingness to explicitly oppose the judicial killing of Mukhlas, Amrozi and Imam Samudra would not help attempts to win clemency for the three Australian drug couriers. Conflicting statements from the Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, in recent weeks have further muddied Canberra's stance. Mr McMahon acts for Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran, the ringleaders, who were found guilty in 2006 of conspiring to import more than eight kilograms of heroin from Bali into Australia. They were condemned to die, along with the courier Scott Rush. The remaining members of the group face long prison terms. Mr McMahon told the Herald that Australia should ...
Waiting to Die: The Cruel Phenomenon of "Death Row Syndrome"  from Death Penalty News
SEATTLE, Washington, Nov 4 (IPS) ? The length of time convicted murderers wait for their execution is steadily rising in the U.S., raising concerns that more will suffer from the mental illness known as "death row syndrome.? The United States' 3,300 death row inmates can now expect to wait an average of 12 years from the day of their sentencing to death by lethal injection or electric chair, a doubling of the time gap in the mid-1980s, according to the U.S. Bureau of Justice. This increase is mainly due to mandatory appeals introduced after capital punishment was reinstated by the Supreme Court in 1976 after a four-year suspension. These reforms have led to lengthier appeals, according to the Washington-based Death Penalty Information Center. The 667 death row inmates in California can expect to wait nearly 20 years. California's last execution was in January 2006. A month later, a judge halted the execution of Michael Morales, already on death row for 25 years, calling for me ...
Indonesia handling of Bali executions questioned  from Death Penalty News
Indonesia's handling of the executions of 3 militants for the 2002 Bali bombings caused unnecessary suffering for victims of the blasts and helped fan domestic passions, Indonesian media said on Monday. The 3 men from the militant Islamist group Jemaah Islamiah -- Imam Samudra, Mukhlas, and Amrozi -- were executed by firing squad on Sunday for the 2002 nightclub attacks that killed 202 people, including 88 Australians and 38 Indonesians. Just days ahead of the executions, the bombers gave interviews to several television channels, often sounding defiant and calling for more attacks. "The 3 terrorists most responsible for the carnage in Bali in October 2002 have finally been executed after months of uncertainty that turned the waiting into a public spectacle that only upset and infuriated relatives of the victims and prolonged their pain," the Jakarta Post said in an editorial. "The media, particularly television, seemed to be a willing partner throughout this whole spectacle, espe ...
Hell Hole News  from Death Penalty News
October 27, 2008 Hello folks, I quit writing this column a few years back because we had a decent warden who was trying to run this place professionally (actually we had two (2) in a row ? Biscoe and Massey) and I didn?t want to be disparaging them. Things since have taken a serious down turn for the worse, to the point that now that I feel compelled to once again take up my pen and deal with it. Running a prison is a difficult endeavor, I?d be the first to agree. Death Row is even more difficult due mainly to the attendant publicity of high profile capital cases. The prisoners themselves are some of the easiest to manage. However, we?re a laid back bunch. Kids grow up playing cops and robbers, cowboys and Indians. Pow, Pow! with their cap pistols. It?s quite a different thing though, when the caps are live bullets, blood flies and people die. As I?ve told y?all 10,000 times in the past, I?m innocent of the crime I?m here for and I have evidence to prove it --- but I?m n ...

Saudi executed for starting a prison fire  from Death Penalty News
November 7, 2008: a Saudi Arabian man was beheaded by the sword after he was convicted of deliberately starting a prison fire which killed 69 inmates in September 2003, the interior ministry said in a statement carried by the official SPA news agency. Saad bin Fhaid al-Sebaiei was executed in Riyadh after he was found guilty of starting the blaze at Al-Hair jail on the southern edge of the Saudi capital, where he was held at the time. In April 2004, the head of Riyadh prisons was fired and several other officials were suspended for dereliction of duty in the deadly incident in Saudi Arabia's largest prison, which housed about 3,500 inmates. The interior ministry said at the time that an inquiry committee established that the fire was started deliberately by Sebaiei, who set a blanket ablaze as prisoners were assembling for noon prayers. Afghanistan: three executed  from Death Penalty News
November 8, 2008: the Afghan government executed three men for crimes including murder, the state broadcaster announced. "The death sentence was implemented on three criminals today," Radio Television Afghanistan (RTA) said in an evening news bulletin. The independent Pajhwok Afghan News agency said the executions had been confirmed to its reporters by a senior Afghan government official who said the three were hanged. One, identified as Ahmad Jahish, was found guilty of the 2005 abduction and murder of a money-changer. He and his gang demanded five million dollars' ransom for release of the hostage and killed him when the money was not paid, RTA said.
