The Franco-German television station ARTE continuously showed the video, To strike extremely, which was created by Vincent Pérez for ECPM and which denounces the death penalty in China in view of the Olympic Games in Peking in 2008.

Albania, Tirana Conference
The Community of Sant'Egidio prepared a conference-debate and collected signatures from the professors and students of two high schools in Tirana.

The Austrian Amnesty International “Death Penalty group carried banners before the Austrian Parliament in Vienna.

The Austrian Amnesty International Death Penalty groupheld a conference on the death penalty in China and in the United States.

The Italian Cultural Institute of Vienna showed the video, It is Not Worth It.

Belgium, Brussels Lobbying
At the initiative of ECPM (Ensemble Contre la Peine de Mort), the World Association of the abolitionist members of Parliament was created in the Belgian Senate, in the presence of more than 60 members of Parliament from throughout the world, of Robert Badinter, French Senator, Armand de Decker, President of the Belgian Senate, Olivier Maingain, Belgian Deputy, and Michel Taube, president of ECPM.

Czech Republic Street Theatre
A dozen activists from Amnesty International dressed up in prison uniforms and carried black hoods, awaiting their “execution”, around informational booths that presented leaflets and petitions to be signed.

Czech Republic, Brno Concert
The Czech section of Amnesty International and a group from the town of Brno did two things: a concert for death row prisoners, by the singer Jaroslav Hutka, and the jazz club of Brno; and the following day, in the street, a dozen activists dressed up in prison uniforms and carried black hoods, as if they were awaiting their “execution”, while they walked around informational booths where leaflets were distributed and the petition was signed.

England, Edinburg Video and Debate
The Italian Cultural Institute of Edinburgh, in collaboration with Amnesty International Scotland, showed the video “It is Not Worth It”, to the friends of the Institute, the press, and members of Amnesty International. Before the video, the director of the Institute and the representative of the local section of Amnesty International gave introductory speeches; these speeches set the tone for a debate.

England, London Conference
In London, there was a conference on the death penalty for juveniles in the United States; three guests: Runa Beazey, Pauline Matthews, Cleave Stafford Smith.

France Publication
Pierre Luton, a journalist, published “A Crazy Hope on Death Row” on World Day. This work contains interviews with Richard Rossi, an American on death row who has been awaiting his execution for 20 years, in total isolation, and who militates against the death penalty and the system that permits it.

France, Paris Theatre
The Opprimé Theatre in Paris orchestrated the evening “So That Tomorrow Justice Will No Longer Kill”: included theatre, texts, music and debates against the death penalty, all under the direction of Rui Frati.

France, Paris Conference
The Human Rights League and the FIDH organized a conference-debate on the topic: “The Creation and the Consequences of Antiterrorists Legislation adopted since September 11, 2001: Americans and Endangered Rights.” With Michel Tubiana, President of LDH, Driss El Yazami, Secretary general of the FIDH, and Marie-Agnes Combesque, leader of the “Universal Abolition Working Group Against the Death Penalty”.

The Italian Cultural Institute of Paris presented the video, “It is not Worth It. The Ballad of Death.”

The Bar association the appellate court of Paris, and Penal Reform International held a conference: “A lawyer fights for abolition in the Caribbean”, by Saoul Lehrfreund, a lawyer, and Paul-Albert Iweins, the President of the Paris Bar.

France, La Roche Sur Yon Debate and Demonstration
At the time of the Roche- Sur-Yon Film Festival, “On the way towards the world”, a round table discussion was held on the death penalty in the presence of the senator Robert Badinter, the journalist Claude Sérillon, and François-Governed Hutin (Ouest France).

France, Lyon Demonstration, Conference, Concert
The associations, “Hands Linked for Justice” and “Justice for West Memphis 3”, and the MJC of Lyon St. Just, in collaboration with the Lyon Association of Neiges, presented informational booths on the death penalty at the same time as the photograph exposition of Gilles Garrigos. This was part of a week of mobilization for four men held on death row in Arkansas and Texas. This event took place one week before a conference-debate on the death penalty and a concert.

France, Montpellier Debate
The Human Rights Institute of the Montpellier Bar organized a debate on the death penalty in China, with Jean-Jacques Gandini, a lawyer from the Montpellier Bar.

France, Marseilles Demonstration
Mumia Abu Jamal and Amnesty International were present in Marseilles at the time of the inauguration of the Mediterranean House for Human Rights, which was created by the Human Rights League 13 and the “Movement Against Racism and for the Friendship Between the People”, in order to promote the exposition “Human Rights In Question”.

France, Rennes Exposition, Concert, Reception
The Town Hall of Rennes presented the exposition “On the Path to Abolition...”, and organized, in the evening, the illumination of the Bretagne Parliament, and a concert, in the presence of Mr. Edmond Herve, mayor of the city, and Alexis Rutman, secretary-general of ECPM.

France, Guadeloupe Lobbying, Video, Debates, and media
The Amnesty International Guadeloupe group “Abolition of the Death Penalty” gathered with Attac-Guadeloupe, ACAT, Justice and Peace, the FSU, Guadeloupe group in support of Mumia Abu Jamal, the young lawyers association, and Cyber Gwada Contact Street. Actions: sending letters to the heads of the Anglophone Caribbean island governments that still have the death penalty in place, and to Fidel Castro; letters to be sent to those condemned to death; a showing of the film “The Last Walk”, which was followed by a debate; the radio, Energy, played music created by the young people from the association “Contact Street” who permitted the petition to be signed on their cyber-cafe; debates were organized on Radio-Massabielle and RFO; and finally the distribution of press releases to the media.

ACAT organized a conference-debate on the United States: “Religion and the Death Penalty” with Isabelle Richet, a professor of American Civilization at the University of Paris at Nanterre, and Jeanne-Henriette Louis.

Screening of the film, “The Last Meal”, by Julien Elie, which depicts Austin, a city in Texas where the principal penitentiary system of the State is located, and which carries out the most executions in the country.

The Community of Sant'Egidio organized a conference-debate and collected signatures from the professors and students of the University of Berlin.

Germany Lobbying
The German section of ACAT wrote to the authorities, and in particular to the German Minister of Justice, asking that the necessary measures be taken so that Protocol 13 of the European Convention on Human Rights, which prohibits capital punishment in all circumstances, is ratified as soon as possible.

The Community of Sant'Egidio in Stoccarda presented a conference-debate and collected signatures.

In Würzburg, the Community of Sant'Egidio organized a conference to discuss the international campaign against the death penalty and they collected signatures.

The Italian Cultural Institute of Budapest, the Community of Sant'Egidio, and Amnesty International joined together to present an exposition on the death penalty, to show the video “It is not Worth It”, and to have the petition signed.

Ireland, Dublin Video
The Italian Cultural Institute of Dublin presented the video “It Is Not Worth It”, which was followed by a debate with the representative from the Irish section of Amnesty International.

Italy, Naples Publication
In Naples, there was a presentation of the book, “Texas Death Row Hotel”, by Arianna Ballotta, Mirella Santamato, and Pietro Santoro.

60 local Italian Amnesty International groups organized to collect signatures for the Petition.

Italy Exposition
The Italian Coalition To Abolish the Death penalty, in cooperation with the Internet store, Agli Incroci dei Venti, organized a virtual exposition of art entitled: “Artists Against the Death Penalty”, for all artists who are against the death penalty.

Italy, Naples Petition
The Community of Sant'Egidio in Naples collected signatures on the petition from students at the University of Naples.

Italy Mailing Postcards
The Community of Sant'Egidio sent a postcard to those condemned to die in many countries throughout the world. Those that took part in the effort: 1,500 members of the movement, “Young people for Peace” from the Community of Sant' Egidio; the elderly persons' movement, “Live the Old People” from 15 countries; 2,500 people who correspond with those condemned to death; and 2,000 people adhering to the initiative.

The Community of Sant'Egidio organized a conference-debate for the professors and students at the University of Rome, “Luiss”, and also organized an exhibition and collected signatures for the petition.

Tuscany celebrated the evening: “Tuscan in Life”, with Professor Angelo Passaleva, vicepresident of the Tuscany region, around a stage performance, “Before the Paddle”, and a debate and a showing of the video “It is Not Worth It”. Those involved: Tuscany and “Pupi E Fresedde - Teatro di Rifredi”, and in collaboration with Amnesty International, the Community of Sant' Egidio, and the foundation of Rocco Derek Barnabei. The video tells the story of six people condemned to death in Japan, China, Uganda, Iran, the United States, and Cuba.

The Italian Cultural Institute of Vilnius showed the video “It Is Not Worth It. The Ballade of Death”. Those who participated were professors and students from universities, high schools, the Italian Cultural Institute, and those who were studying or teaching the Italian language.

Amnesty International and ACAT published a press release.

Poland Conference
Anna Crawford presented the actions of the OSCE on the death penalty, which was followed by representatives from the NGOs from each country that still had the death penalty - or the countries that have placed a moratorium on all executions.

Poland, Kraksaw Video The Italian Cultural Institute of Kraksaw showed the movie, "It Is Not Worth It", along with a debate and a speech by the director of the Italian Cultural Institute.

Students and professors at the University of Bucharest viewed the film, “It Is Not Worth It”, which was followed by a conference by the director of the Institute, Vito Grasso: “The humanistic contribution of Italian Illuminisme.”

Russia, Moscow Video
In Moscow, the Community of Sant'Egidio showed the film, “The Last Walk”, and collected signatures for the petition.

The Italian Cultural Institute of Ljubljana showed the film, “It Is Not Worth It”.

Spain, Madrid Conference
The Community of Sant'Egidio and Amnesty International presented a conference-debate and a round table discussion for the professors and students of the University of Madrid.

Spain, Barcelona Conference, Demonstration, and Media
Amnesty International Spain organized, in a university, a meeting with the father of Pablo Ibar, who was on death row in the United States. It also issued a press release and demonstrated against the death penalty in the streets of Barcelona, and then collected signatures for the petition.

Switzerland Media
Amnesty International, ACAT, and Lifespark issued a joint press release.

The Netherlands, Amsterdam Video
The Italian Cultural Institute of Amsterdam, in collaboration with the local Amnesty International Section, showed the movie, “It Is Not Worth It,” and the film, “Sacco et Vanzetti,” by Giuliano Montaldo.

South Africa, University of Witwatersrand Debate
The University of Witwatersrand and Amnesty International South Africa held a debate with Stephen Langtry (AI), Robert McBride, former prisoner on death row in South Africa, Ebrahim Patel, a representative of the South African Muslim Theologians, and Anchen Dreyer, a member of the provincial legislature in Gauteng for the opposition party, and the Democratic Alliance, with George Bizos (who formed part of the legal defense team for Nelson Mandela, and served on other lawsuits in Rivonia in 1963).

Benin Media
Amnesty International Benin published a press release in two daily newspapers and gave interviews on the national televisions station (ORTB), GOLF-TV, and Radio GOLFFM. A televised debate took place on the need to abolish the death penalty on October 14 on Television LC2.

Burundi Media
Along with PRI, the production studio “IJAMBO” and Radio “Isangarino” produced and developed radio broadcasts against the death penalty. An on-line debate accompanied the production.

Cameroon, Bafia Media
Studio Posts National CRTV, LP STUDIO 1634, Yaounde, and principal media of the country. The ACAT Bafia, the local antenna of ACAT Cameroon, conducted a debate with the Cameroon Radio and Television (CRTV) audience, and intervened in the media to require the Cameroon government to take a clear position against the death penalty.

Ecumenical celebration in the presence of locally elected individuals, the leaders of opinion, church leaders, Christian movements, teachers and members of the administration.

Tanzania, Dar Es Salaam Debate
In Notre Dame cathedral, more than 50 people from the Tanzania Human Rights organization of Amnesty International organized a conference and a protest at Dar Es Salaam; the magistrates and the armed forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo debated on “The Problem of the Death Penalty in the Democratic Republic of Cong.

Congo, Kisangani Lobbying, Visiting those condemned to death
The members of ACAT, Kisangani, sent a message to the political administrative authorities and to the soldiers against the death penalty. South-Kivu of ACAT visited 15 people condemned to death in the central prison of Bukavu and they held a conference-debate.

Congo, Kinshasa Debate
The Cultural Organization for Peace and Justice organized a conference-debate at the university and a visit in the Kinshasa prison to speak with those condemned to death.

Mauritius Media
The Mauritian Section of Amnesty International and the death penalty coordinator gave two radio interviews on an Island radio station.

Nigeria Media
Legal Resource Consortium organized a media campaign (press releases and TV debates on the death penalty).

Rwanda Debate
The Center of Free-Rwandan Cultural Exchanges organized a debate: Relevance of the death penalty in Rwanda today, with Gerd Hankel (HIS), Lars Waldorf (HRW), Tito Rutaremara (Constitutional and Legal Commission), and Laurien Ntezimana (FRIENDLY).

Tanzania, Dar Es Salaam Manifestation
Amnesty International Tanzania issued a press release and organized a conference and a demonstration in Dar Es Salaam.

Togo, Lome Media
The Togolaise section of Amnesty International conducted interviews by the Associated Secretarygeneral, Mr. Vewonyi Hotowossi, on Radio Zephyr and Radio Chick FM of Lome on October 9 and 10. A press release was issued.

Uganda, Kampala Debate
Amnesty International Uganda held a public discussion, sent out the Coalition's Petition and informed the media. A press release was also issued at the time of the Summit of Organizations for the Protection of African Human Rights in September 2003.

Zimbabwe Petition
The local section of Amnesty International organized a meeting to collect signatures for the Coalition's petition.

Argentina Petition
Sant'Egidio gathered signatures from children and teenagers at the School of Peace, and from old and handicapped people.

Bolivia Petition
The Community of Sant'Egidio and Amnesty International sent the Petition out and organized activities with children on the topic of the death penalty.

Brazil, San Paolo Debate
A debate on the death penalty and the screening of film It is not Worth It were organized at the Italian Cultural Institute of San Paolo, in the presence of Mr. Helio Bicudo, Vice-Mayor of the city, and Judge Fabio Prieto de Souza.

Canada, Toronto Debate
The Italian Cultural Institute of Toronto showed the film It is not Worth It and organized a debate with the professors and students of the institute.

Guatemala Media
To inaugurate a national forum on the death penalty in Guatemala, Penal Reform International and the Guatemalan Institute of Comparative Studies created posters, and organized expositions and a forum on the subject.

Guatemala Lobbying
Amnesty International addressed a letter to all of the presidential candidates, requiring them to adopt a clear position against the death penalty, and, once elected, to take suitable measurements to abolish the death penalty.

Mexico Petition
The Community of Sant'Egidio collected signatures and presented the initiative Write To A Person Condemned to Death and showed the video entitled the Voice of Livingston.

Mexico Lobbying
Amnesty International Mexico addressed a letter to all the Mexican ambassadors to countries that use the death penalty, and encouraged the public to take part in a letter campaign to Mexican authorities. A press release was also issued.

Mexico Demonstration
Amnesty International Mexico, in collaboration with other associations, organized a demonstration in front of the United States embassy in Mexico City.

Nicaragua Petition
The Community of Sant'Egidio collected signatures for the petition and said a prayer for those condemned to death.

Paraguay Media
Amnesty International Paraguay issued a press release.

San Salvador Conference and Media
The Community of Sant'Egidio organized a conference, showed the video Voice of Livingston to journalists, lawyers, catholic and noncatholic groups, and students, and organized a prayer for those condemned to death.

United States, Ohio Conferences
The association Journey of Hope organized throughout several weeks a “Journey of Hope”: speakers and families of victims of those who were condemned to death went to colleges, universities, churches and other places to discuss the death penalty.

Within the framework of the Journey of Hope, a conference with the students from Bishop Hartley college was given by Suzann Bosler.

At the University of the Capital, there was a conference held for two classes of students by Eloise Williams and Donna Larsen.

United States Debates
In the framework of the national weekend of Faith In Action on the death penalty, initiated by Amnesty International, the leaders of religious communities from around the country conducted letter campaigns to the state legislators, and they organized debates and showed informational videos.

United States, Austin Demonstration
Texas Coalition against the Death Penalty carried out its 4 th annual walk in Austin to demand the abolition of executions in Texas.

United States, Florida Demonstration
Amnesty International United States and Pax Christi Naples of the Church St. John the Evangelist in Naples, Florida formed a human chain in opposition to the death penalty, and had street theatre and music.

China, Hong Kong Media, Video, Exhibition, Concert
Amnesty International of Hong Kong issued a press release and a letter summarizing its concerns with regards to the death penalty situation in Asia; it was signed by elected officials and eminent Asian personalities. A video was shown, and a demonstration and concert were organized.

India Video and debate Bombay
The Indian Center for Human Rights after showing a video on the death penalty, organized a debate and street theatre in order to sensitize public opinion.

Japan, Tokyo Debate
Amnesty International Japan and Forum 90 gathered 800 people in Tokyo for a debate on the abolition of the death penalty in Japan. Various speakers from Taiwan, South Korea and Thailand tackled the subject of the abolition of the death penalty in Asia.

Japan, Nagoya Debate
The Forum for the Abolition of the Death Penalty of Nagoya organized a debate between Reiko Oshima and families who have had a relative murdered.

Japan, Kanazawa Video
The Kanazawa group of Amnesty International Japan showed videos about the abolition of the death penalty; more than 100 participants viewed it.

Japan, Osaka Debate
Amnesty International Japan and the Network for the Abolition of the Death Penalty of Osaka organized a debate between a family, who had a close relative murdered, and Mr. Masaharu Harada.

Japan Conference
Amnesty International Japan and the National Network for the Abolition of the Death Penalty in Tokyo held a conference: Free Trade Movements in Japan: Past, Present and Future, presented by a long-time abolitionist activist, Sayoko Kikuchi, who told his story.

Japan, Sapporo Debate and Exposition
Amnesty International Japan, the Network for the Abolition of the Death Penalty in Sapporo, the Japanese groups, Sapporo and Kitahiroshima, of Amnesty International, all organized, in the presence of a hundred participants, a debate with the family of a victim, and held an exhibit of photographs showing those condemned to death who have been executed.

Kazakhstan Information Campaign
The OSCE coordinated, along with Amnesty International, Penal Reform International and other NGOs, a campaign for students, the media, and NGOs.

Malaysia, Taylors Debate, Theatre, and Exposition
Amnesty International Malaysia, in collaboration with the University of Taylors, organized a debate on the benefits of abolishing the death penalty, followed by two short theatrical presentations and an exhibit regarding the death penalty.

New Zealand Petition
Several New Zealand universities set up informational tables where people could sign the petition; it was accompanied by false execution scenes, posters and folders.

Phillipines, Manilla Debate, Concert, and Exposition
The Philippine Coalition Against the Death Penalty, the Center for Human Rights of Ateneo, Manilles, the Office of Business and Social Engagements of Ateneo, and the office of the Senator Aquilino Pimentel, organized one debate and Symposium on the death penalty at the University of Ateneo, Manilles, which included the testimony of crime victims, families of executed prisoners, former prisoners of death row, and communities. A meal, a concert of solidarity, and an exhibit of works made by death row prisoners were also included in the program.

Amnesty International Thailand issued a press release on the death penalty situation in the country.

Algeria, Algiers Media
The Algerian Human Rights League held a press conference to specifically denounce the executions and the death sentences in Algeria (more than 300 cases listed since 1993, ten of which were illegal executions).

Jordan Conference
Penal Reform International and Mizan (a law group for human rights) held a round table to discuss the first results of the study Death penalty and discriminations in Jordan, under the hospices of the Honorable Ahmed Obeidat, Former Prime Minister, President of the National Center for Human Rights.
Around 90 people attended including two members of parliament, one Senator, Judges, NGO people, Police etc. Four papers were presented addressing: death penalty and discrimination, death penalty in Islam, death penalty in Christianity, and role of doctors in death penalty executions.
It was decided to set a National committee to study the issue of death penalty in Jordan and reduce the number of felonies punished in death penalty.

Lebanon, Beirut Video
Professors and students from the Italian Cultural Institute of Beirut watched the film, “It Is Not Worth It.”

Lebanon, Beirut Conference
The Amnesty International Regional office, in collaboration with the Jean Monnet Chair and the European Union Studies Center at the University Saint Joseph (USJ), organized a round table discussion with Hassan Kawwas, a lawyer and former president of the Court of Assises, Elias Khoury, writer and editor of Mulhaq of Al-Nahar, and Ahmed Karaoud, director of the Amnesty International regional office.

Morocco, Casablanca Colloquium
The Moroccan Observatory of Prisons, Penal Reform International, the International Federation of the Human Rights League, Amnesty International of Morocco and the Coalition Against the Death Penalty held a day of debates for the abolition of the death penalty in Morocco. The Moroccan media largely covered the event.

World Day 2003: entire World

Video
The Local Italian Culture Institute showed, on October 10, 2003, the video "It is Not Worth It" (produced by the Tuscan Region, this video tells the story of 6 death row inmates in Japan, China, Uganda, Iran, the United States, and Cuba) in 15 countries: Albania, Australia, Brazil, Croatia, Finland, Holland, Lebanon, Malta, Mexico, Peru, South Africa, Spain, Syria, Turkey, and Yugoslavia.

Activities
In 60 cities around the world (e.g., Roma, Napoli, Florence, Milano, Livorno, Messina, Palermo, Barcelona, Madrid, Antwerp, Wurzburg, El Salvador, Buenos Aires, Maputo, Abidjan, Conakry...), the Community of Sant'Egidio and the movement “Rainbow Country” set up activities with children and teenagers who are in the movement: poetry, drawings, readings, and compositions on the topic of the death penalty.

In 63 countries, 188 initiatives were organized on October 10, 2003 to say NO to the death penalty. On 5 continents, and in many countries that still have capital punishment, citizens protested, together to say NO to the death penalty.

The World Coalition against the death penalty has called on local organizations to make World Day a truly international event including thousands of grassrotts initiatives.
