Action by Christians for the Abolition of Torture (ACAT-France) is an ecumenical organisation fighting against torture and the death penalty around the world and defending asylum rights.
ACAT-France is made up of 10,000 activists, 400 local groups and 17 staff members.
It is affiliated to the International Federation of ACAT (FIACAT) which has consultative status with the UN, the Council of Europe and the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights.
Campaigning for the abolition of torture and every other form of cruel, inhumane and degrading treatment leads ACAT-France to lobby governments (including the French one) and international organisations. It aims, in particular, to protect persons likely to be tortured, executed or imprisoned without trial; to condemn executioners; and to ensure the establishment of national and international inspection bodies.
ACAT raises awareness among the public – and in particular among Christians – by creating and disseminating documents and reflections. These actions aim to effect opinion change so as to create a situation favourable to the complete abolition of torture and executions.
The association defends the right to asylum to support refugees and advance asylum legislation and practice in France and in Europe.
Each year, ACAT contributes to the release of hundreds of prisoners or to the ending of their mistreatment.
