    • The World Coalition plays a pivotal role at the 3rd World Congress Against the Death Penalty

Article published on May 01st, 2007

The 3rd World Congress Against the Death Penalty came to an end in Paris on 3 February 2007. It was an opportunity for abolitionists from all around the world to come together in greater numbers than ever to exchange experiences and prospects for the future.

    • The World Coalition Against the Death Penalty played an active role in the preparation of the Congress organised by ECPM (Together against the Death Penalty), both in developing the Congress’s content and in organising debates and roundtable discussions. It was also heavily involved in drafting the Final Declaration which, for the first time, united all abolitionist movements around a common position. In particular, the Declaration recommends the adoption by the General Assembly of the United Nations of a resolution calling for an immediate and universal moratorium on death sentences and executions, and the commutation of existing death sentences.
The Paris Congress was also an opportunity to widen the debate and explore areas of action for the campaign the WCADP is about to launch. Amongst other things, this campaign will seek to promote ratification of the Second Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights of the United Nations, and encourage the development of regional coalitions in the Middle East and North Africa, and the African Great Lakes region.
