      Steering Committee Member
      Type: NGO
      Founded: 1987

    • The International Federation of Christian Action for the Abolition of Torture (FIACAT) is an international non-governmental organization in defense of human rights.

      The statutes

FIACAT was created by 10 national ACATs on 8 February 1987. It brings together 30 ACATS present in four continents; six ACATs are in the process of affiliation at this time.
A non-profit association under French law, the FIACAT has a mandate to work in favor of the abolition of torture and the death penalty.
The International Bureau, elected by the International Council, which brings together delegates of the member associations of the network every four years and establishes the broad orientation of the organization, supervises the International secretariat’s work. The International secretariat is composed of two paid positions in Paris and a third in Geneva.

      Mission

      • International Representation of the Network

The FIACAT represents the ACATs before the international and regional bodies with which it has consultative status before the United Nations (UNO) and the International Francophone Organization (l’Organisation internationale de la Francophonie), participative status at the Council of Europe, and observer status before the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (CADHP).
The FIACAT works in close collaboration with other non-governmental organizations in defense of human rights, as well as with churches and religious congregations.
Through its different organs, the FIACAT pleads for the abolition of torture and the death penalty and works to develop and put in place international mechanisms in its domains.

      • Network Activities

The FIACAT helps the ACATs achieve structure and become major players in civil society, who are capable of influencing changes in outlook and structure in their respective countries, starting with Christian communities and Churches.
The FIACAT supports the network by encouraging exchanges and suggesting regional or international developments as well as common initiatives. Thus, FIACAT supports the ACATs’ actions and offers them international links.
The FIACAT also encourages the development of the network through the creation of new national ACATs and the establishment of regional structures that are essential to national associations.

      Funding

The FIACAT’s work is made possible by the financial support of network members, private individuals and non-governmental organizations and well as states.
