    • JOB OFFER - ECPM – Coordinator for the 6th World Congress against the Death Penalty

Ensemble contre la peine de mort (Together against the Death Penalty - ECPM) is recruiting a coordinator for the 6th World Congress against the Death Penalty (Oslo / June 2016)

Since its creation in 2000, ECPM fights against the death penalty worldwide. The association encourages the universal abolition of the death penalty through advocacy actions before governments, the strengthening of abolitionist civil society, the creation and sharing of publications, support to death row prisoners, and the teaching abolition in France and abroad.

ECPM brings together abolitionists from all around the world to speed up the movement for a universal abolition of the death penalty and to improve its efficiency.

In 2001, ECPM organised the first World Congress against the Death Penalty in Strasbourg. This Congress triggered the formation of an international movement for abolition; a movement which gathered members of civil society as well as international political figures and Organizations. After this first success, four editions followed (Montreal, 2004, Paris 2007, Geneva 2010, Madrid 2013). World Congresses against the death penalty are aimed at strengthening the work of local actors, initiating and developing joint strategies for abolition, encouraging countries to take concrete actions, mobilising citizens. They gather on average 1,500 people from a hundred countries, a hundred political delegations and are covered by the international press.

Since 2012, the World Congress against the death penalty is preceded by a Congress with a regional focus, aiming to prepare the debates to allow progress on the region at the World Congress.

These two events are part of the international campaign for the universal abolition of capital punishment.

Project objective for which the position is created:

The objective of the "World Congress of Oslo" project is to support the international momentum towards the abolition of the death penalty by promoting concerted action at national, regional and international levels and promoting abolition in Asian region and parliamentary action.

In this context, a regional congress in Asia (Kuala Lumpur, June 2015, 300 people) was just held in Malaysia to promote initiatives in the Asian region and prepare the debates taking place during the World Congress of Oslo which will be dedicated to this region.

Thus, the World Congress of Oslo targets political, associative, media, legal, cultural and educational actors. It will provide lobbying and advocacy actions, support to civil society (including the animation of various working groups), mobilization of both abolitionist and non-abolitionist media.

The Oslo World Congress is being organised in partnership with: the World Coalition against the Death Penalty (a platform of 160 members in 50 countries on five continents) to develop the programme and debates and the Department of Norwegian foreign affairs, country sponsoring this 6th edition. An informal group of States, the Core Group, also supports ECPM in its strive for political mobilisation.
