The National Tunisian Coalition Against the Death Penalty was founded in answer to the 2007 World Congress Against the Death Penalty, where abolitionist activists were encouraged to organise at the national and regional levels.
The National Coalition focuses on Tunisia and conducts research and actions to achieve the abolition of the death penalty in the country.
Its charter states the objective of “obtaining abolition of the death penalty in [its] country and taking a leading role by coordinating action to promote a large-scale civil movement supporting abolition and by taking action with the authorities for [its] country to rejoin the group of abolitionist States”.
The National Coalition's seven founding members are:
- Ligue Tunisienne de Défense des Droits de l’Homme (Tunisian League for the Defence of Human Rights - LTDH)
- Amnesty International's Tunisia section
- Institut Arabe des Droits de l’Homme (Arab Institute for Human Rights - IADH)
- Association Tunisienne des Femmes Démocrates (Tunisian Association of Democrat Women - ATFD)
- Association des Femmes Tunisiennes pour la Recherche et le Développement (Association of Tunisian Women for Research and Development - AFTURD)
- Syndicat national des journalistes tunisiens (National Union of Tunisian Journalists - SNJT)
- Fédération Tunisienne des Ciné-clubs (Tunisian Federation of Film Societies - FTCC).ental organization, supported by contributions from private individuals and foundations worldwide. It accepts no government funds, directly or indirectly.
