The Congolese coalition came to be in 2004 thanks to the association Culture pour la paix et la justice (Culture for Peace and Justice – CPJ), which coordinates it, and the Campagne pour les droits de l'Homme au Congo (Campaign for Human Rights in the Congo – CDHC), which is responsible for its secretaryship.
Liévin N'Gondji, a lawyer and founder of CPJ, who was also a founding member of the World Coalition and has attended all the World Congresses against the Death Penalty since 2001, believes in its goal to link all abolitionist actors.
Today, the Congolese coalition and the World Coalition collaborate for the creation of a coalition regrouping actors of the African Great Lakes region. In a country marked by the civil war of the late 1990s and massive use of the death penalty, notably by military courts, the Congolese coalition fights for its definitive abolition. The effectiveness of it actions is intimated by the disappearance of all references to capital punishment in the new DRC constitution.
The members of the Congolese coalition are now calling for clear confirmation of its abolition in Congolese law and for progress as to the fate of the sentenced still waiting for a theoretical execution.
