      Advocates for Human Rights

      United States

      Steering Committee Member
      Type: NGO
      Founded: 1983

    • The mission of The Advocates for Human Rights is to implement international human rights standards in order to promote civil society and reinforce the rule of law. By involving volunteers in research, education, and advocacy, The Advocates build broad constituencies in the United States and select global communities.

      More than a decade ago, The Advocates adopted a formal commitment to oppose the death penalty worldwide. In the United States, the capricious and arbitrary administration of the death penalty results in an enormous need for competent lawyers to assist death row inmates with their post-conviction appeals. The Advocates' Death Penalty Project was organized in 1991 to recruit Minnesota attorneys to respond to this need. The Project also provides education and advocacy on death penalty issues.
      Its Death Penalty Project has worked in coalition to successfully defeat proposed death penalty legislation in Minnesota; co-hosted 24 free lectures on various capital punishment issues; co-hosted film screenings and theater performances; commented on and urged the U.S. Department of Justice not to adopt proposed regulations on fast-track capital cases; and issued a submission to the U.N. Office of the High Commission for Human Rights on implementation of Resolution 62/149, Moratorium on the Use of the Death Penalty.

      The Advocates plan to continue their actions aimed at abolition of the death penalty through the following:
      • Developing a free educational toolkit on the death penalty;
      • Launching Conversations on the Death Penalty, an audio series of interviews with advocates against the death penalty;
      • Coordinating community educational events and guest lecture on capital punishment issues;
      • Working on an international level to combat the death penalty and work toward a moratorium;
      • Remain poised to work against any efforts to reinstate the death penalty in Minnesota;
      • Remain poised to work toward a moratorium of the federal death penalty.
